About MWAS

The Mid-Western Artifact Society is a non-profit, incorporated metal detecting club based in the area of Kansas City, KS. The club was founded in 1976 and is a proud member of the Federation of Metal Detector and Archaeological Clubs, Inc. (FMDAC). We are dedicated to preserving the hobby of metal detecting.

When needed, our club works with the Kansas City Metro Squad to help them recover metallic evidence. Our Police Hunt Coordinator, upon being contacted by the area police, calls and organizes members from a list of volunteers. Even though participation is strictly voluntary, the club has never failed to provide the police with assistance when required to date.

Regarding Meetings...

Usually, monthly meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month. Meetings are held indoors in the evening during the months of November through March, and outdoors at various times of the day at hunt sites from April through October. Outdoor meetings typically not only include a hunt together, but also a pot luck picnic. The Annual Hunt, a paid competition hunt open to club members, is held in September. If you would like to attend one of our meetings, please contact our club President, Dan Spielbusch.

Dues are $20 a year with $5 of this amount enrolling you in membership in the FMDAC as well. The club year runs from October through September. Although members may join at any time during the year, membership dues should be paid by January if possible. Those paying dues on or after March 1st and participating in the voluntary Septermber Annual Hunt are subjected to a late membership fee of $5, increasing by $5 for each month past March they joined, added to their Annual Hunt fee (example: joining in May would add a $15 late membership fee to the Annual Hunt fee if participating, but if not participating in the Annual Hunt, you still would have paid only $20 for your club membership). The Annual Hunt fee is subject to change year to year based upon the cost of silver. The Annual Hunt fee is due by the end of July. Payment in August or September an additional $10 late hunt payment fee is required.

However, even if you don't join, use of the resources of this site is free. Please stop by and register on our message board, take part in our discussions, and share your finds or find out more about the hobby. You'll discover a wealth of people who enjoy all aspects of metal detecting in our membership and on our message board.

If you have lost a metallic item and have a pretty good idea of where you lost it, let us find it for you. Most of the time we will be happy to find it for you at no cost, asking only permission to keep any coins found while searching for your item. If for some reason a charge is required, that will be addressed before we begin the search.
