Indian War Hammer
« on: February 22, 2008, 04:06:48 PM »
Found this just last year at the old Fort Atkinson site. This fort was host to the 1853 peace treaty. I'm not much on Indian artifacts, but this is one of my best relics. I found it right after the farmer had plowed, and at first I thought it was a potato.

That is just downright awesome!!! That relic alone would get me hooked and looking for other stuff.
Have you ever got it appraised? I know for a fact that you could get some good money for it! 8)

Nope never had it appraised. I did some searching on some sites more attuned to Indian artifacts and was told it was typical of the plains Indian. At first I thought someone could be playing a joke because it's made of sandstone. But I was told the Indians of this area often used sandstone for such battle hammers.

It wouldn't be good for much more than pounding meat, or I guess someones skull.

I was also told it was probably around 300 years old.
