Hello All,
Though this isn't recent news I thought I would share anyway.Last January when it was bone chilling cold,I had a severe case of cabin fever and had to get out of the house.A friend and I went out to hit a field that had given up military relics consistantly over the years, and upon arrival found the shovel would only go a few inches in the soil.Rather than throw in the towel we decided to give it a go.Normally I dig everything but in this extreme case I cherry picked. So I only dug 3 targets,a musket ball,a 3 cent piece(my first) and last signal was a bouncy one but decided to go for it anyway.Pinpointing it was exceedingly difficult and as I widened the hole I decided to make a joke and remarked "I hope I don't scratch that gold coin!"As I reached down and caught a glint of something on edge in the hole I thought it was some kind of foil candy wrapper. My heart pounded as I picked it up and felt the weight. It was a gold coin!I had never found one nor did I imagine I ever would. It is an 1851 quarter eagle in exceptional condition Philadelphia mint.
