Received England Finds from Last August
« on: July 26, 2015, 10:32:28 PM »
I went on my eighth metal detecting trip to England last year with Discovery Tours.  I got my finds back in May and just recently got part of them photographed.  There have been two or three presentations on England detecting given at MWAS meetings, so many understand the process.  By English law all finds over 300 years old must be identified and then recorded in a national finds database that is used for all kinds of research purposes.  One of the benefits of Discovery Tours is that all finds are identified by experts in their field who work for a large museum, rather than being identified by the tour operators.  Also, by EU law, all finds over 50 years old must have an export license to leave the EU.  The only downside of all this is that it takes a while for everything to get done and the finds returned.  It does make for "Christmas" in May.

I found 11 hammered English silver coins last year.  The newest dated to 1596.  The second newest dated to 1307.  The oldest dated to 1180.  I was also extremely lucky and found an Edward III gold Half Noble from 1363-1369.  It is 27mm in diameter (a quarter is 24mm) and weighs .14 oz.

Since these finds are from nearly a year ago I thought they were pretty "old news" and wasn't sure I should post them.  The recent post by Borderruffian of the fantastic quarter eagle from last January persuaded me to go ahead and post.  I hope no one minds.

I picked two to post.

Edward I Penny Class 9b London, 1300

Edward III Half Noble Treaty Series London, 1363-1369
